What it Was Like Designing for A Showhouse

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

My very first experience working on Showhouse was in 2020 and it was a really wonderful opportunity that I learned a lot from. Getting to work behind the scenes and accessorize one of the rooms, allowed me to see how all the details of a Showhouse come together. With Showhouse design, typically there is one designated designer who works with the builder and the architect to create all of the architectural design elements and will also spec the “fixed” design elements, such as flooring and cabinetry. Then a selected group of designers are each designated a space in the home to design however they please.

In 2021, I had the privilege of being part of the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Showhouse and co-designing one of the spaces. Our designated area was a laundry room and a hallway, and although those seem like mundane spaces, we transformed them into beautiful rooms that anyone would want to spend time in.

The home was a 12,000 sq. ft. build in the highly sought after Vinings area of Atlanta. Design for the space that I collaborated on began early in September. From lighting, to paint, to wallpaper, we selected elements that really brought the spaces to life and gave them a rich and inviting feel.

In the hallway, textiles such as a Schumacher velvet in a gorgeous rose tone on a vintage Duncan Pfife sofa and a patterned, cut velvet from Kravet in chocolate brown and ivory for the window treatments elevated the space and gave it warmth and depth. The hallway was grounded with a hand knotted rug from Jaipur in soft ivory tones.

A gorgeous Circa lantern hung from the ceiling of the hallway and Circa floor lamps took their place on either side of the sofa. Nestled beside the floor lamps were gold and marble side tables from Currey & Co and a garden stool covered in shagreen from Jerry Pair.

In the laundry room, custom cabinetry in Benjamin Moore Regent Green surrounded the walls. The ceiling was covered in a champagne cork wallpaper and a luxurious pendant from Currey & Co hung from the center. A large quartz sunburst mirror from Ernest Gaspard made a statement front and center on the main wall. Grounding the center of the room was an antique work table from France, paired with an emerald velvet tufted bench for seating, providing a perfect place for drinking a glass of wine while folding laundry or working on creative projects.

Stunning, custom artwork from a variety of local artists including Caryn Crawford, Leslie Busker and Emily Newman of Emily Anne Art Studio, decorated the walls in both spaces and truly brought them to life. A variety of unique objects and accessories were thoughtfully placed throughout the space, adding even more interest and dimension. And of course it was a holiday showhouse, so beautiful and tasteful Christmas decor brought in the holiday cheer! The space was a great success!

Showhouse design is a highly collaborative effort and that is what I love the most about being a part of them. It was an honor getting to design alongside other incredibly talented designers to individually, yet collectively, create something that become a whole and beautiful masterpiece. It is a really awesome experience and if you ever have the opportunity to be a part of one, I would encourage it! Creating beauty with others is a really special thing!
